Welcome To The Family: Justin Bryksa

26 01 2011

Photobucket

For the first birthday of Streejesus we thought it only fitting to add to the family. We have been working on expanding for some time now and have been on the lookout for new additions since day one.

We thought we would take our time adding to the crew to make sure we did it right. Spending some time on this has us confident that our decision will be one that benefits everyone involved from day one.

Obviously we wanted to go with someone who has been down with us since the start, and not just the start of Streetjesus, but potentially the first ever fan of Jeff and myself. We had a few solid options of who to go with as the first team member, which is good for us as this is hopefully the first of many homies to fly the flag.

The fist time I met Justin “Lil’ Bryks” Bryksa I didn’t know what to think. Here was this kid, who was basically a smaller, younger, more talented version of us. The steeze was tight, the stoke was epic and the potential for greatness was endless.

As I got to know Justin and his older brother Jesse I knew that what these guys were up to was going to be something special. They were so focused on the positive things that it has made them almost unstoppable. The main focus of the Bryksa’s and the entire crew that runs with them, whether it be Team Sunshine or just Da Boyz is to be “Moked” as often as possible, and the best part is that their enthusiasm is infectious.

Greasy Like Pepperoni & Mushrooms At "The Show"

I took the morning the other day to sit down over some Timmy’s and milk and talk with Lil Bryks about being the first ambassador of SJ and what exactly makes this kid tick. I wanted it to be one of those formal “team announcement” type things, but by the time we were done I was laughing so hard, we just finished the conversation by pretty much planning a pizza party.

This is a little taste of what Bryks had to say.

SJ: Alright bud, here it is the big intro. Tell the World about Lil’ Bryks!

JUSTIN BRYKSA: Lil’ Bryks, came from Strasbourg, Sk which for those of you who don’t know where that is (chuckles) it’s pretty much just north of Regina. Grew up there, watched my first X-Games when I was 6 and got into skateboarding. Got a little mini-ramp in the backyard. Me and my brother pretty much just grew up skating, swimming and eating pizza, then we found snowboarding and it pretty much just went from there.

Rockin' & Rollin' At Woodward

SJ: With 2011 clearly being the year of the jesus, what are some of the things you are stoked on for the year?

JB: Just living a worry free life basically, shredding, eating and partying. Hopefully hit up some comps in Sask and basically just have a good time riding with my homies.

SJ: What has been the coolest thing to go down for you so far this year?

JB: Definitely just getting the chance to ride with my friends all the time, like on Team Sunshine and just never having 3to find people to ride with, just riding with your best friends all the time. Just stoked on that.

Da Boyz Playin' Some Dice

SJ: So, since the only tunes you listen to when you ride is whatever you can hear through Matt Stefan’s lid, what is the last YouTube video you watch to get stoked before you shred?

JB: DANGER ZONE FROM TOP GUN FOR SURE!

SJ: And you clearly like to eat (and drink milk) so what is the pre-shred meal for Lil’ Bryks?

JB: Pepperoni pizza for sure, and if I’m feeling a little greasy then mushrooms for sure. I don’t even like mushrooms but for what ever reason they just make a pepperoni pizza taste better!

Photobucket

SJ: Sounds like a treat! Ok so anyone you wanna give some love to before we wrap things up?

JB: Shout outs to my bro Jesse for sure, for just always driving me and pushing me. My whole life from when I started shredding I always looked up to him and tried to do what he did. All my homies on Team Sunshine, and my best friend Ian. Obviously all those amazing riders like Mark and Seb and my favorite Mikkel Bang for just keeping us stoked on shredding everyday.

And with that Justin put on his oversized jacket and headed off to work. Then to shred, then probably fly airplanes (for real) and eat some more.

In 2011 more eyes than ever will be on Lil’ Bryks and the ever expanding team of riders with SJ on their backs. We will be spending today wishing Bryks a happy birthday, but after all the fun and games it will be time to get down to…Fun and games. Look for fresh content featuring LB and SJ very soon!

Here’s To The Shops

2 12 2010

At some point a while back, someone decided it was a good idea to lease out a small building, fill it with a bunch of bright gear and steezy kids, and call it a shop. That person is my hero.

I just read an article about how Zumiez (American version of West 49 basically), has posted it’s highest quarterly profits in the company’s history. Turning board shops into mall stores is working quite well apparently. At the same time, people like Jake Burton are launching tons of new initiatives to get people out of the malls, and back where they belong… in the shops… supporting the people who eat, sleep and breathe action sports. Jake’s goal this year is to ride 100 days, and also visit 100 Burton dealers… tough life, but at least we’re on the same page.

So I beg of you, the next time you need a fresh kit or some new snowboard boots, go that extra ten minutes out of your way and visit your local shop… you know, the one with the bandana-wearing kids who are crushing coffee and talking about Shane O’Neill’s new part… not the mall store with the Moms and the Blink 182… and you know, the other shitty stuff.

Here’s to all the shops that have shaped my life, and continue to keep me stoked to this day!

It Could Be Worse – Survival Tips For The Recovering (Action Sports) Athlete

6 07 2010

It happens to all of us, right?

One tiny slip, one minor misjudgment, or one nagging friend who claims “Nah duude, just send it, you’ll be fine!” and your back, looking at the sky, wondering where it all went wrong. This is usually followed by two thoughts;
“What’s broken?” and “How long is it going to take to heal?”

I’ve been laid up for the past two weeks, due to something so routine and harmless yet just enough to make me miss three days of summer riding in Colorado at one of the top snowboard training facilities in the world. Bad timing much? And as it tends to happen, things go from bad to worse. I flew home early only to learn from my doctor that I would be spending the next three weeks without work at home with mono.

So with one week left, and a lot of time left to sit around, I’ve decided to share some of my experience and knowledge and make your next recovery session pain-free and over before you know it.

Top Necessary Tools For Surviving Life On The Couch

1. A Big Ass T.V.
– Preferably 50″ or bigger, and definitely no smaller than 42″. When your best/only friend/only thing you’ll be seeing for a while is your TV, that shit better be tight. I’m talking 1080p HD, LCD or Plasma with enough refresh speed to make your Call of Duty movements as smooth as butter on a hot muffin.
* Note: PS3, or Xbox also required. I didn’t say this was gonna be cheap.

2. Wireless Internet
– I know,  most of you are like what the ? I’ve had that shit since ’94! Well I’m staying with my parents who live in Strasbourg which  technologically speaking is the equivalent of a third world country. We just got high-speed last year. So sit your laptop on your lap, turn on the PS3 and hit me up on Live – revello306.

3. Painkillers
– Now I’m not talking any sissy small time Advil or Tylenol. Since you can’t bring the morphine home, get your doc to hook you down with some T3’s at the very least. Shout out to my male-nurse Josh at the Frisco hospital for hooking me up with a prescription for 50 tabs of Vicodin. Not only does it eliminate  pain, but every other feeling in your body.

* On a serious side note, take it slow, Vicodin is also the drug that Dr. House is addicted to on the show House, and I’m pretty sure a bunch of celebs have overdosed on it, so just keep it real.

4. Microwaveable Meals
– Nobody likes cooking when you’re sick or hurt, so spending the least amount of time in the kitchen is key. Ichiban is stock, and you can get it in a ton of flavors, as well as my personal favorite; Kraft Dinner in a cup. When that just won’t do it, Safeway usually has deals on Hungry Man meals which are greasy as fuck, but will do exactly what they’re supposed to do. Also, a bag of buns and a package of bologna is literally perfect for any  meal of the day.

5. Vitamins/ Vitamin Water
– As serious and necessary as the last four topics were, your parents will actually agree with this one. If you don’t like the taste of multi-V’s or Vitamin C or have some issue with pills, you can get kids multi-vitamin gummy bears. I don’t care how old you are, eating candy that is truthfully good for you may be the best invention in the history of the world… since Vitamin Water… tons of flavors, tastes great, ridiculously good for you, and endorsed by 50 Cent which means it’s gangsta too. Go down to wholesale foods, pick up a crate of this stuff in Lemonade, and drink your illness away.

* If you’re feeling boring or cheap, regular water is alright too.

6. Banger Websites
– No, not porno. Banger Sites are online gold mines of entertainment. Seeing as how being good at the
internet is part of my job, I have shortlisted my top five websites for the down and out skater/snowboarder.
If your into Moto, call Daku. Here we go:

1. snowboarding.transworld.net – No questions asked 2. theberrics.com – Koston and Berra’s park of skate gods 3. push.ca – Literally up to the minute news 4. helgasons.com – Hilarious AND gnarly 5. streetjesus.net – need I say more?

If you’re into online shopping, don’t be. This tends to cause more issues than needed in order to save you that extra $30… support your local shop. * If you still don’t want to leave your home, sunshineandski.com always has some good deals and the xtreme-adrenaline website is pretty rad as well.

7. Creamsicles
– More of a summer thing and goes well with a fan/air-conditioning. Not only are Creamsicles just plain delicious, they’re soothing for the throat and perfectly refreshing on the hottest summer days. See below for the picture of my fridge.

8. Supporting crew
– Mom, dogs, family, friends, and girlfriend. Life’s just a lot easier with the people who matter the most  around to help you out when you’re feeling down. Whether it be cooking for you, covering your shifts at work, or just being around to tell you how bad you smell; a good supportive crew is the best thing for a speedy recovery.

* Note getting a good girlfriend is a little harder than grabbing a box of creamsicles from your local store, but in time will prove to be extremely worthwhile. Shout out to my girl dj Lene for hooking me up for my video part.

9. An external hard drive
– I almost didn’t put this on here, but these things are so clutch it’s not even funny. Get your girl (or boy) to load you up with 500 gigs of seasons of Entourage, or Lost, or Glee or whatever the fuck you’re into. All your favorite TV shows and movies on one device. DVD’s are a thing of the past.

10. A positive attitude
– Everything will be alright. Actually. Unless your back is broken (like our dear friend KP or Danny Davis) it will only be a matter of time so just live it out. Don’t rush, do it right the first time and you won’t have to do it again. Although not being able to shred feels like the worst thing in the world, stick to this guide and you’ll see that life isn’t too bad after all… and remember, it could be worse.

This has been Jesse “The Sunshine Kid” Bryksa reporting for streetjesus.net LIVE from My Parents Couch, Saskatchewan, and it’s official; the future is bright.

Jesse Bryksa is a close personal friend of the streetjesus team and has been for some time. When we realized we had the chance to work together we had to jump at the opportunity. We would like to wish Jesse a speedy recovery and hope he is back tearing up Regina and area in no time. If you want to see more of his work check out TEAM SUNSHINE for the latest news on all things shred. Thanks again to Jesse for doin’ it like a gangsta!” -ty

Inbox: with Jesse Bryksa of Sunshine & Ski

17 04 2010

Over the last year or so, we have spent a lot of quality time with Jesse Bryksa and the Sunshine & Ski crew. All this time has me realizing that these kids are doing something really special. If you need any proof of how rad this gang is, look at your Facebook. You will find all sorts of misty little nuggets filling you in on the impending take over of the “Sunshine Kids”

Now that you are hopefully a little better acquainted with what they are all about, you should be mentally prepared for this.

Sunshine & Ski will be dominating every hill they set foot on during the 2010-2011. Not just because they kill it every time they go out, but because now they are one, massively steezey, ultra-cohesive unit. That’s right the brain-nug of Jesse himself has come to full fruition. Sunshine now has a team!

A long time in the making, the crew that has been killing it for years is now under the same loving umbrella.

After chasing after him for weeks about this  I finally cornered Jesse while he was crushing Mexican beer (probably) and forced him to do an exclusive interview.  This is what he had to say.  Enjoy!

StreetJesus:  ALRIGHT DUDE, PUT DOWN THAT FROSTY, LIME-INFUSED BEVERAGE AND LET’S TALK.  TELL ME ABOUT THIS ALL-STAR TEAM YOU’VE CONCOCTED!

Jesse Bryksa: “I’ve been thinking about this for a while, even before last season but was kind of just waiting for the right timing. THESHOW went off, and we had some momentum going so we decided to kind of keep it going. Josh, Levi, and I had a lot of time to talk during the building of THESHOW, so this was just the next step. The people we needed to show up, did, so everything was already in place, and we just had to make it happen.”

SJ:  MAKING IT HAPPEN AND SUNSHINE SEEM TO GO HAND IN HAND.  HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHO WAS GOING TO BE A PART OF THIS TEAM?

JB: “Sunshine is and always really has been a family. Literally and figuratively. So I wanted the team to have the same kind of feel. I mean Josh is cousins with Levi who dates Matt’s sister and grew up with Cole. Justin is my brother and we both rode with Alex so much this year that he feels like a brother to both of us. We’ve had so much fun riding together and just chilling together and after building THESHOW everything just fell into place.”

Team Rider and Brother Justin Getting It Done At THESHOW

SJ:  THAT’S THE CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD!  SO ASIDE FROM DINNERS AND T-SHIRTS WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT FROM THIS NEW FAMILY?

JB: “We’ve got lots going on even for the next couple months. The team is getting together with Snowbox Freestyle and is making a trip to Woodward Snowboard Camp this june for some training and fun with foam pits/ air bags and everything that is good…”

TO READ MORE ABOUT SNOWBOX FREESTYLE AND THE WOODWARD EXPERIENCE HAVE A LOOK AT JEFF’S INBOX W/ JOSH BRESCIANI

“…That being said their will be some sort of blog/website posted soon with videos, and trick tips and just news in the shop and community.”

SJ: MAKING IT HAPPEN, AND HELPING THE SNOWBOARD COMMUNITY! WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?  BUT AS WE ALL KNOW, TEAMS ARE PUT TOGETHER FOR TWO REASONS, TO HELP THE SPONSORS AND TO HELP THE RIDERS.  HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO BOTH?

JB: “What Sunshine wants out of this is to get kids stoked on good products from good brands. Getting people to worry more about how the board feels and rides rather than how it looks…”
(Jesse continued on helping the riders)…”Keeping this in mind, i’m stoked to say we’ve teamed up with (nothing but the finest) Rome Snowboards and we’ll all be fully decked out in Rome everything this upcoming season. I couldn’t think of a better brand to ride or represent.”

SJ: KEEPIN’ IT PROPER…LIKE THAT!  ANYTHING ELSE WE CAN BANK ON SEEING AS A RESULT OF THE SUNSHINE TEAM NEXT SEASON?

JB: “We’re also teaming up with Snowbox Freestyle and Design, PoKed Media and hopefully some others to bring you more events like THESHOW, lots of trips, running the park at Mission, and just having a ton of fun.”

Levi Zeigler's Poked Media...Goin' BIG

SJ: TONS OF FUN, JUST THE WAY WE LIKE IT!  WHO’S ALL IN ON THIS FUN-FEST?

JB: “The team is Levi Zeigler, Josh Bresciani, Justin Bryksa, Alex Dong, Cole Welter and Matt Stefan… Zach Henry will be kickin’ around too!  All the guys really represent exactly what snowboarding is; having fun, pushing the sport, and doing what we love. Nobody cares about being hesh or G or whatever’s cool (no hate) but strictly about snowboarding. That’s it. That’s all.”

SJ: SO IF THE KIDS READING THIS WANT TO BE A PART OF THE FAMILY-FUNFEST SUNSHINE TEAM, WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?

JB: “Front blunts, back lips and corked 5’s… Haha no, just be yourself.  Ride what and how you want, and have your own style.  You’ll get noticed!”

SJ: OK MAN, I WILL LET YOU GET BACK TO YOUR CORONA.  ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SAY, OR LOVE TO GIVE?

JB: “Props to Snowbox Freestyle, Rome Snowboards, and Poked Media…It’s a huge colab.  And bigg shoutouts to streetjesus! Were all in this together.”

And with that said, Jesse disappeared, back to work… no doubt getting ready for a big weekend.  So I will end with this.  Sunshine & Ski is in good hands.  With people this passionate, this actively involved in the scene who knows what is possible for snowboarding on the prairies.  I for one am very stoked for the snow to show itself again, so this big happy family can show us what snowboarding is all about!
