Jake Burton is CEO. Oakley is Big. Action Sports!

3 05 2010

Burton’s Laurent Potdevin (seen above in Burton T-shirt) has resigned as the company’s CEO. Laurent has been working closely with Jake for the last 15 years, but has resigned to “pursue other opportunities”… apparently he has plans to be the CEO of heaven. All of this means that Jake Burton Carpenter is now the interim CEO of Burton… go Jake!

In other news regarding ginormous companies, Oakley (logo seen above) is growing rapidly. The company’s sales are 20% stronger than the first quarter of last year. This jump in sales has a lot to do with Oakley’s growth outside of North America, and I’m sure their strong presence on the Olympic podium didn’t hurt either.

There is other good news for action sports retail as well! Sales in March for all categories, excluding footwear, are up over the same month last year (just look at the graph I’ve included above!). The whole industry has been waiting for this turnaround to happen for quite some time, so congrats everyone… we’re killing it.
